West Branch BOE to meet Thursday
BELOIT -- West Branch Local School District Board of Education will hold a regular meeting with a work session reviewing agenda items at 6 p.m. Thursday in the high school media room followed by a meeting at 7:30 p.m.
Kirk Krieger benefit planned
LISBON -- The benefit for Kirk Krieger will be held from 4 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4111, 210 E. Lincolnway. Proceeds will be used for medical expenses for Krieger who has been diagnosed with stage three esophageal cancer. There also will be a Chinese auction and 50/50 drawing. Bands are scheduled to play from 6 to 9 p.m.

Benefit bass tourney set at reservoir
SALEM -- A benefit bass tourney will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Salem Reservoir on Gamble Road, off of Teegarden Road. Fifty percent of the tourney proceeds and 50 percent of the 50/50 raffle will be given to Dawn M. Garwood for medical bills. She has been diagnosed with stage four colon cancer. The entry fee is $25 in advance and $30 the day of the tournament. The entry fee includes a walleye and perch fish fry, hamburgers, hot dogs and a variety of sides. Rabies prevention clinic offered
LISBON -- A rabies prevention clinic, sponsored by the Columbiana County Health Department and the Lisbon Veterinary Clinic, will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center, 9364 state Route 45 South. Cost is $5 per dose for pets that are 3 months of age and older. All dogs and cats must be on a leash or confined in a cage. Rabies vaccination certificates will be issued.
Damascus Ruritans plan food drive during rabies prevention clinic
DAMASCUS -- The Damascus Ruritan Club is sponsoring a non-perishable food and monetary collection from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Damascus Fire Department meeting room on Route 534. All proceeds will benefit the Damascus Friends Church Food Pantry which helps the needy in the Damascus area.
A rabies prevention clinic, conducted by the Mahoning County Board of Health and the club, will be held at the same time and place. Cost is $8 per animal. All cats must be in a cage and all dogs on a leash.
Swiss steak supper offered
ALLIANCE - The public is welcome to Columbiana County Pomona Grange's family-style swiss steak supper to be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 30 at Mile Branch Grange on Knox School Road. Carryouts are available. Cost is $11 for adults and $5 for ages 6 to 10. There also will be a country store offering fresh baked goods.
"Paint and Sip" event set
EAST LIVERPOOL -- Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center volunteer Tracy Doerr will lead the first "Paint and Sip" event from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 30 at the center. Participants may bring their own beverage and favorite snacks. The wildlife center will provide soda, coffee, water, snacks, canvas, paint, brushes, etc. Space is limited to 16. Breakfast buffet scheduled

Tables open at indoor craft show
WASHINGTONVILLE -- Table rentals are still available for the first indoor craft show at Beaver Creek Sportsman Club. Cost is $20 per table with a $10 craft donation. Benefit dinner planned
WINONA -- A benefit dinner for Amy (Plues) Hall will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Winona Friends Church. The meal includes swiss steak, salad, vegetable, mashed potatoes, roll and dessert. Cost is $9 per person. All proceeds will benefit Hall who is battling brain cancer.
Space open at Pioneer Craft Days
EAST LIVERPOOL -- Friends of Beaver Creek State Park have announced that space rentals for crafters and artisans are still available for Pioneer Craft Days. Giant pumpkin weigh-off
CANFIELD -- Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers will host its 23rd annual giant pumpkin weigh-off from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 14 at Parks Garden Center, 9010 U.S. Route 62. Prize money this year will exceed $25,000 for the heaviest categories of giant pumpkin (first place will receive $5,000), watermelon, tomato and Halloween-type pumpkin. Also included are widest sunflower head and longest gourd.
Growers wishing to enter any category must have their entry at Parks Garden Center by 9 a.m. Oct. 14. Exhibits will remain on display until 4 p.m. There is no admission charge. A lunch stand will be available.
Elks offer scholarships
SALEM -- Elks National and Salem Elks local scholarship applications are now available online at enf.elks.org/mvs. The same application is used for both, the ENF Most Valuable Student Scholarship. Seniors should contact their guidance counselor for information, or contact Terry Kornbau at 330-337-7337 or 330-397-2677. Applications are due online by Nov. 27.
The Educational Fund Grant applications are available online at web-ster.net/ohio elks/. These grants are available to high school seniors or graduates attending a post-secondary technical education. They cannot be used if enrolling in a bachelor's degree program. The deadline to Salem Elks is March 1, 2018. For information call Lisa Wadlow at 419-266-7123.
The Emergency Educational Grant is available to children of deceased or totally disabled Elks members. Applications are available at 773-755-4732 or scholarship@elks.org. The application deadline is Oct. 31.
The Legacy Award is open to high school seniors whose parents or grandparents are Elks members. Applications must be completed and submitted online only at enf.elks.org/leg. The deadline is Feb. 2, 2018.
